We were so excited to drop off 21 coats today at the Rosedale Library, which is one of the drop off locations for New York Cares. The girls were touched to know that a young boy or girl would be receiving a new coat this winter. Fortunately, our winter has just started getting cold, making us right on time. "New York Cares was founded by a group of friends who wanted to take action against serious social issues that faced NYC in the late 1980s. Finding few options to help, they created their own organization to address the problems from the ground up. New York Cares is now the city's largest volunteer management organization, running volunteer programs for 1,300 nonprofits, city agencies, and public schools. Today's volunteers share our founders' vision that we all have a role to play in making our city a better place". Click HERE to read more about their story. We want to thank all of you who supported "A Christmas Carol" A New Musical Kickstarter. Just think, because of you, 21 children will have a beautiful warm coat as shown above. A follow up blog will be coming soon for the 48 blankets that will be keeping 48 warm bodies this winter. We look forward to taking this a new level of giving for "A Christmas Carol" A New Musical 2016. There are so many pieces to the puzzle when it comes to marketing your musical for the NYC stage. So who was one of the amazing marketers from Amanda Bohan Marketing (click HERE for more info on Amanda Bohan marketing), for “A Christmas Carol”? Jillian Donchak, was so instrumental in getting the word out through marketing the show. Jillian Marie Donchak Marketing Assistant for "A Christmas Carol" A New Musical has her AAS in Entertainment Technology from Mercer County Community College and is currently earning her BA in Theater Concentration Design Technology at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her past experience are Assistant Publicists for "Midsummer's Night Dream", Stage Manager for "Cabaret", and "A Doll's House", Assistant Stage Manager for "Macbeth", "Romeo and Juliet, "Pirates of Penzance", and "Tosca". Jillian would like to thank her family and fiance for always keeping her spirits up, Prof. Munoz for sparking her interest in Marketing for theater and Amanda, Daniel and Sam for helping her on this new experience. What a relief it was to have Jillian working on the marketing end for “A Christmas Carol” because that is one area that can chew a great deal of time from our producing responsibilities. We can’t thank you enough for contributing to the overall success to the show. I leave you with one of Scrooge’s turning moments in the show, “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all year”. It was an honor to have Jillian a part of "A Christmas Carol" A New Musical. Vyctoria is a young lady who always finishes strong, a kind hearted, and gentle person. It was so funny to watch her bring out the feistiness when sharing her feelings about Scrooge. Watching her bring it home in Hide, Martha, Hide reminded me just how much power Vyctoria possesses vocally. It has been a joy to work with Vyctoria and we look forward to watching her continued success. Sydney graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson in May 2015 where she received her degree in theatre. She moved to New York city in August from Palm Springs, California and is very exciting to be making her NYC debut in “A Christmas Carol” A New Musical with the Orama Theatre Company. Sydney has been studying acting, singing and dance since she was seven. She participated in California Musical Theatre’s Camp Music Circus, was a member of the Sacramento Theatre Company and attended the Open Jar Institute college program in New York. Sydney’s favorite role was playing Judy in A Chorus Line when she was 17, but her theatre career started with her first professional part in the Sacramento Theatre Company’s production of A Christmas Carol when she was 9, funny how things come full circle! Sydney most recently received the award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Barbara in BOOM. In high school she received the Actor of the Year Award for her portrayal of Brooke in Noises Off. She was nominated for the Desert Theatre League’s Most Outstanding Juvenile Award for her performances in Night of the Iguana and A Chorus Line. It is no surprise Sydney is quickly hitting the stages of NYC after her recent graduation in May of 2015. A claim that many young performers would love to have when heading to the heart of theatre, NYC. Her poise and grace to the role of Eve is capped with beautiful vocal ability. We look forward to hearing her grace the stage in our final performances. We encourage you to find out more about Sydney by visiting her website www.sydneywerry.com I leave you with one of Eve’s touching lyrics regarding Scrooge, “He will see the light above, that will give a second chance. Again, in life he will receive.” Until the Next Time, Daniel Daniel is a highly sought after industry professional in voice instruction, especially in the art of breathing. For more information on Daniel’s expertise visit theschoolofsinging.com After one of our shows this past weekend, I met a couple that were professional opera singers. In our conversation, I found out the gentleman went to the same conservatory as I, The New England Conservatory. Needless to say, we had lots to talk about, reminiscing about the voice instructors we knew, the new installation of Jordan Hall, which is the central piece to New England life in Boston. Jordan Hall has staged some of the world’s leading performance soloists in every voice and music classification. Today, it is a national historic landmark in the heart of Boston. Okay, so am I writing this blog to highlight Jordan Hall or The New England Conservatory? Contraire, in fact we are now headed in a new direction. While we were speaking, he communicated how much he enjoyed “A Christmas Carol”. What I am about to share is very personal, but worth mentioning because it is certainly a highlight to many moments on opening weekend. He raved about how much he loved the show, especially, the scene between Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim performing the song “It’s You and Me”. He mentioned that there were so many layers to the song, bringing tears to his eyes as he watched a father doing all the things he yearned to do with his son, like playing ball and running together. In this scene, Bob Cratchit goes into a daydream of what it would have been like if his boy was never sick. Yes, a very moving scene indeed. Okay what came next really put the icing on the cake and I shared something about the scene that was very personal and dear to my heart. I said, I want to share something very personal about that scene. You see, the scene for me is the reverse. When I wrote the scene, it was me yearning for an opportunity to play ball with my father because I grew up a fatherless child, never knowing who he was. Upon stating those words to him, something amazing happened, a tear ran down the right side of his cheek and noticeable once it cleared the path of his eye-glass rim. We were touched beyond belief. He completely understood the power of that scene, but now received a greater insight and appreciation to the writing behind it. I truly believe while bad things may happen to good people, a greater or equal seed of good and beauty can come out of it leading to redemption of the soul. Yes, I know this one was a bit heavy, but how can we keep silent when we all have amazing stories to share that can uplift and encourage the next person to just hang in there one more day gaining victory with the ones that they love.
